If you're really worried about a surgery, first find out if you'll be awake or unconscious. For me, that makes ALL the difference. If they tell you you'll be awake, REQUEST that they put you under. I was awake when I had surgery on my head, and it was rather scary. I wish I had asked them to K-O me or at least make me sleepy. However, when I had my wisdom teeth removed, they first gave me some nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to get me relaxed and then stuck an IV in my vein to administer an anesthetic. I honestly don't remember falling asleep or waking up. All I remember was being very groggy, asking when they would start, and being told they were done! Overall, the only painful thing at all during the procedure was having a tourniquet wrapped around my arm to insert the IV.
Also, if there is a window in the room, try looking outside before/during/after the procedure. It really helped me to see all the little birds at the birdfeeder outside, it was very relaxing.
The initial fear long before the surgery is actually worse than the surgery itself or the point right before the surgery (but I guess that maybe the laughing gas had something to do with the latter).
If they do put you under (which is preferable to being awake), you'll likely be very very sleepy for the rest of the day. Seriously. You likely won't want to do anything but sleep. I personally found that to be a very comfortable and pleasant way to spend a day after mild discomfort and surgery.
Don't worry about it too much. I had my wisdom teeth taken out and it didn't bother me at all. I swear I felt absoultely no pain what so ever. I was worried about it to because everyone I knew said it was aweful. Well it was exactly the opposite for me. I was very happy when it was over. I also heard people sleep a lot after they get it done from the medication. Well I didn't at all. I was wide awake. I even wanted to eat after it was done, but my mom said no. Which probably was a good idea, but I still wanted to eat. My surgery went fine so I'm sure yours will to. So try not to worry too much. You'll be fine.

There may be light at the end of the tunnel but sometimes it\'s a train.
Everytime you look at yaoi, a ninja kills a kitten. Good thing I'm a dog person.

"And gears." Said Anathema "My bike didn't have gears. I'm sure my bike didn't have gears."
Crowley leaned over to the angel. "Oh lord, heal this bike." He whispered sarcastically.
"I'm sorry, I just got carried away." hissed Aziraphale
